SOUTH OF ZEROThe best place to start is SouthofZero (SoZ), an awesome "metablog" run by Mary "Posterdog" Beckman. SouthofZero lists upwards of 40 bloggers on its Blogroll, plus another couple dozen Ecuador-related websites. Mary tracks them every day of the week and provides "Morning Updates" from the blogosphere. She also occasionally weaves together thematic threads; a good example is the January 27 Blog Roundup on the cost of living in Ecuador, with links to eight blogs that cover this crucial (and overhyped) aspect of expatism. Mary has been doing this since June 2010 and has amassed nearly 300 posts through January 2011. The Comment boxes are often lively and Mary stays right on top of them. She's nothing if not diligent, though she says SoZ kind of "took off on her." She's also an excellent wordsmith in her own write; South of Zero, in my humble opinion, is an extremely clever name for an Ecuadorian website, especially a gateway to nearly four score other sites. She's coined the terms "wannamoves" and "gonnamoves" for potential pilgrims. And her thumbnails of the blogs she covers are always engaging; she's elevated blurbage to a fine art. But the Nobel for Neologisms has to go to husband Steve, who came up with the perfect contraction for expats in Ecuador: "Xpadorians," which the Beckmans have graciously allowed me to adopt. Needless to say (though I'll say it anyway), SouthofZero is not only the best place to start your Hot Links search, it's the only place to start. |
